COMMUNITY COMMUNICATION

Make a public post easy to verify and act on.

A practical guide to building traction for a local issue while protecting privacy and keeping claims evidence-led.

08 · Public communication

Make the issue easy to verify, share and act on.

Social media can bring neighbours together and make a stalled issue visible. It does not create a municipal work order by itself: log the fault through an official channel, then use a clear public post to seek a specific update and keep the record moving.

Give people the facts they need

A strong post answers what, where, when, who is affected, what has already been done and what response is needed.

What
Name one observable fault or service interruption; separate what you saw from what you suspect.
Where
Ward plus a nearby public street, intersection or landmark. Do not expose a resident’s home address.
When and impact
Give the start date/time, last check, duration and practical effect on residents, access or safety.
Official record
Include the municipal reference and date logged if safe to share. Keep account, meter and personal details private.
Evidence
Use one clear, dated photo or a short clip from a safe public place, with a caption describing what it shows.
Specific ask
Request the responsible unit, next action, expected update date and a written status against the reference.

Build reach without weakening trust

Aim for the right residents and decision-makers to see one credible record, not a noisy pile-on.

Choose a useful format
A short caption with the key facts first; add a photo or a 15–30 second clip, captions for speech, and alt text describing the image.
Share locally
Post in the affected neighbourhood or ward group and one relevant public municipal thread. Ask a ward representative for a dated update.
Use a small number of tags
Tag the responsible municipal account or office and use one location/service hashtag, such as #NelsonMandelaBay. Follow the group’s posting rules.
Invite useful participation
Ask affected neighbours to log their own cases and share their ward and impact. Do not ask people to copy-paste identical posts or invent support.

A widely shared post is not proof that a claim is true or that work is under way. Correct mistakes visibly, add dated updates to the same thread, and close the loop when residents can verify the repair.

Copy-ready post template

Replace the brackets, keep only details you can verify, then redact personal or account information before posting.

NELSON MANDELA BAY SERVICE ISSUE — [service / fault]

WHERE: Ward [number], near [public landmark or intersection]
WHEN: First noticed [date/time]; last checked [date/time]
IMPACT: [What is affected and for how long]
OFFICIAL REPORT: Logged with NMBM on [date] — reference [number, if safe to share]

I have asked [municipal unit / ward representative] to confirm the responsible team, next action and a date for the next update. Please share a verified update against this reference.

Evidence: [briefly say what the attached photo/video shows]
Update: [date] — [new verified information or “no response yet”]

Please do not post anyone’s phone number, account number, ID, private address or identifiable image without consent.

A simple follow-through rhythm

  1. Log it first. Use the NMBM E-Service portal or Customer Care at 041 506 5555; save the reference and date.
  2. Publish one clear post. Share the reference, public location, evidence and a concrete request. Link the official report route so others can create separate cases.
  3. Keep a dated thread. Update the original post when the municipality responds, a promised date passes, or the situation changes. Keep screenshots and a private case log.
  4. Escalate the record. If the deadline passes, forward the case number and unanswered request to Customer Care and the ward councillor; ask for the next responsible office and a new date.
  5. Verify closure. Confirm the service is working, not only that a crew arrived. Post the outcome or state clearly what remains unresolved.
Safety and privacy
Do not trespass, approach dangerous infrastructure, film people in distress, identify children, publish vehicle plates or private account details, or make unverified criminal accusations. For an immediate emergency use emergency services, not a social post.

Municipal channels: use the one that fits

The general Customer Care and E-Service routes remain the starting point for ordinary service faults. NMBM also announced a Safety & Security WhatsApp line for safety-related reports; check the municipality’s latest notice before relying on it.

Safety-linked reports: NMBM’s official WhatsApp line notice lists 079 490 0480 for WhatsApp messages about crime tip-offs, traffic, by-law issues, infrastructure vandalism, disaster risks and service issues linked to safety. The municipality says it complements existing reporting systems and is not an emergency service; call 10111 or the relevant emergency service for emergencies. This is not the general service-fault hotline.
